America has a new Air Force One — but it came from Qatar, and the debate over its cost, security, and legality is just getting started.
Story Highlights
- President Trump unveiled the new Air Force One on June 19, 2026, at Joint Base Andrews — a Boeing 747-8 donated by the Qatari royal family.
- The U.S. Air Force stripped the jet to its frame and rebuilt it with secure communications, missile defenses, and other classified systems.
- The Air Force says the total refurbishment cost will likely stay under $400 million, but some aviation experts warn it could top $1 billion.
- The jet is a temporary “bridge” aircraft until Boeing delivers two purpose-built presidential planes, expected around 2028.
Trump Shows Off the New Presidential Jet
President Trump unveiled the new Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews on June 19, 2026. The jet is a Boeing 747-8 that Qatar’s royal family donated to the U.S. Department of Defense last year.
Trump called it the “world’s most luxurious plane” and said it has only about 800 hours of flight time — practically brand new by aircraft standards. The plane is painted in red, white, and blue with “United States of America” along the fuselage.

Trump also claimed the jet is nearly double the size of the current Air Force One fleet — the aging Boeing VC-25As — and said it can fly further and faster. According to USA Today, the new aircraft is 18 feet 4 inches longer than the outgoing planes, allowing it to carry more weight and reach slightly greater speeds. [2]
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth formally accepted the aircraft from Qatar last year, and Air Force Secretary Troy Meink directed the Pentagon to begin the conversion process.
A Total Rebuild, Not a Simple Upgrade
This was no routine refurbishment. U.S. intelligence and security agencies had to strip the jet down to its bare frame and rebuild it from scratch. Workers installed secure government communications gear, missile defense systems, electronic jamming countermeasures, and protection against electromagnetic pulse attacks. [5]
The conversion work was handled primarily by defense contractor L3Harris and took nearly a year, starting in Texas in September 2025. [10]
The Air Force announced on May 1, 2026, that modifications and flight testing were complete. [10] The jet now carries the official designation “VC-25B Bridge.”
It will serve as a temporary presidential transport — a “bridge” aircraft — until Boeing finishes two new purpose-built planes expected around 2028. [3] Trump said the plane also includes Starlink satellite technology for advanced communications.
Cost Questions and Ethics Concerns Remain
The price tag is disputed. Air Force Secretary Meink told lawmakers the refurbishment would likely cost less than $400 million. [8] But three aviation experts told NBC News the total cost could exceed $1 billion once all the classified systems are factored in. [7] Those competing numbers leave real questions about whether this deal saves taxpayers money compared to simply waiting for Boeing’s new planes.
Ethics concerns have also followed the deal. Federal rules cap the value of gifts that U.S. officials can accept at under $500. The White House says the transfer is legal because the government — not Trump personally — received the plane. [6] Still, some lawmakers from both parties raised red flags.
Republican Senator Ted Cruz said the arrangement “poses significant espionage and surveillance problems.” [5] Senate Democrats called it a potential foreign-influence risk. Adding to the debate, the plane is expected to transfer to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation before Trump leaves office. [1]
The bottom line: the new jet gives the president a bigger, newer aircraft while the long-delayed Boeing planes are finished. The current VC-25As have been flying presidents since the late 1980s, so an upgrade was overdue.
But unanswered questions about the full cost, the security certification process, and the plane’s eventual transfer to a private foundation mean this story is far from over. Americans deserve full transparency on what they paid and what they got.
