Rep.: ‘What the Hell Is This Evil?’

(TheIndependentStar.com) – In a forceful new onslaught against Americans’ Second Amendment rights, President Joe Biden’s administration has launched a “resource center” for snatching firearms from people deemed a “threat,” causing one Republican congressman to exclaim, “What the hell is this evil?”

The Department of Justice under President Joe Biden introduced the National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center on Saturday, a move that caught some members of Congress from the Republican party off guard.

“The new national resource center will provide our partners across the country with valuable resources to keep firearms out of the hands of individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others,” Attorney General Merrick Garland stated in a press release on Saturday, cited by The Daily Wire.

Known as “red flag” laws, Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) empower authorities to remove firearms from individuals judged by a court to be a danger to themselves or others.

These orders also prohibit the individual from acquiring or possessing firearms for as long as the order is in effect.

“The establishment of the Center is the latest example of the Justice Department’s work to use every tool provided by the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to protect communities from gun violence,” Garland added.

The center, which also launched a new website, is aimed at being “a resource for implementers” and will “provide training and technical assistance to law enforcement officials, prosecutors, attorneys, judges, clinicians, victim service and social service providers, community organizations, and behavioral health professionals responsible for implementing laws designed to keep guns out of the hands of people who pose a threat to themselves or others.”

Additionally, the National ERPO Resource Center’s website offers a comprehensive guide on red flag laws across the United States, including specific details on the ERPO laws of each state. Presently, 21 states and the District of Columbia have enacted red flag laws.

The announcement of the DOJ’s new gun-control resource center was met with surprise by Republicans in both the House and Senate.

“What the hell is this evil?” reacted Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) on X.

“A Federal Red Flag center; We did not authorize this. Announced, of course, just hours after the omnibus passes,” he added.

In a similar vein, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) expressed his skepticism by saying, “Oh, really?” upon learning of the DOJ announcing the resource center.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) succinctly responded to the DOJ’s post with, “Nope.”
