Police Force Suspended; Residents Shocked

(TheIndependentStar.com) – In an unexplained decision that has left residents shocked, anxious, and skeptical, the Ridgely Police Department suspended its entire force in Ridgely, Maryland.

Located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Ridgely made the unexpected announcement to have other public safety agencies, leaving its inhabitants completely in the dark about the reason behind the shutdown.

“What’s very concerning is that they didn’t communicate with us in an honest and open way,” said Laura Cline, a longtime Ridgely resident. “Treat us with respect. We’re adults — thinking, rational adults who deserve the truth.”

Similarly, Holly Justice, a local business owner, said the decision made her feel blindsided and was doubtful about the integrity of those tasked with protecting the community.

The town’s website mentioned that the town’s three-member commission had suspended the entire Ridgely Police Department with pay and that the Office of State Prosecutor would investigate potential wrongdoing.

“It doesn’t add up,” said Gennie Woo, a business owner in downtown Ridgely since 1983. “Everybody is skeptical about what happened. We just want to know how and why.”

To address public safety concerns during the suspension, the nearby Caroline County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police have been called upon to respond to emergencies, although this has raised worries about longer response times and increased vulnerability to crime.

Despite Ridgely and Caroline County historically experiencing low crime rates, people fear potential repercussions from the reduced law enforcement presence.

While the police force’s duties predominantly involve handling minor public safety issues and community engagement residents remain uncertain about the suspension’s implications for their safety and well-being.
