In 2024, Arlington’s homicide unit asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Dallas field office to run that unknown female DNA through its Investigative Genetic Genealogy program. This process does not work like a simple police DNA match.
Analysts upload the crime-scene profile to a genealogy database that people voluntarily use to find relatives, then build family trees from partial matches and public records. It is an investigative shortcut to a list of possible names, not courtroom proof on its own.

According to the FBI and Arlington police, the genealogy work pointed to a relative of a woman later identified as 42-year-old real estate agent Mayra Velasquez.
Detectives then dug through family history, locations, and ages and say the tree narrowed toward Velasquez as a likely source of the unknown female DNA.
The fork in the trash and the claimed DNA match
Once police had Velasquez in their sights, they went hunting for what they call a “reference sample.” Court documents and local reports say undercover officers watched her eat lunch with friends and then seized plastic forks she discarded.

The real race happens in court, where defense lawyers can finally demand bench notes, challenge methods, and test whether that tiny blood droplet and that used fork truly point to guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
For Americans who value both law and liberty, the lesson is double-edged. Modern DNA tools can correct old wrongs and hold violent offenders accountable even decades later. They can also tempt officials to lean too hard on “the science” while shielding details from public review.
The right balance is simple but not easy: cheer the technology when it is transparent, tested, and confirmed, and stay skeptical whenever officials say, “Trust us, the DNA proves it,” but refuse to show their work.
