(TheIndependentStar.com) – As the details of the massive spending bill that was just signed into law became public, fiscal conservatives were shocked at a number of provisions that will hit taxpayers hard and seemingly have little to no benefit for the American public.
Among this package was an allocation of $200 million destined for the construction of a new FBI headquarters.
Previously, Republicans had cut $654 million from the FBI’s operating budget in the last spending bill, only to discover that $200 million was set aside for the General Services Administration, responsible for federal building projects.
“The $1.2 trillion, 1000-page swamp-bus released in the dead of night includes $200 MILLION for a new FBI Headquarters So much for those ‘cuts’ to FBI,” Representative Chip Roy (R-Texas), said in a post on X.
Conservatives voiced their discontent with the FBI, and accused it of targeting Christians, pro-life activists, and parents while highlighting numerous ongoing controversies.
In addition, representative Eric Burlison (R-Mo.) stated in another post, “The FBI labels parents as domestic terrorists, targets pro-lifers, and wages a war against conservative Americans. Their punishment? $200 MILLION for a new headquarters in this ‘minibus.’”
Representative Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) previously introduced an unsuccessful amendment to curb funding for the FBI’s headquarters, with 70 Republicans voting against it.
While some conservatives opposed a new headquarters altogether, another polemical issue emerged over its location: Maryland or Virginia. Ultimately, Greenbelt, Maryland, was selected.
In contrast, Senator Chris Van Hollen, (D-Md.) said in a statement, “This bipartisan legislation invests in … the necessary funding to build the new FBI headquarters in Greenbelt, Maryland.”
He kept arguing, “[U]nfortunately, Republicans demanded cuts that will make it harder for federal agencies to deliver results for the American people, but I am glad that we defeated the most egregious cuts and harmful provisions put forward by MAGA Republicans in the House.”
