At a time when Congress is debating a game-changing piece of legislation, authorities had to act quickly to minimize disruptions.
Specifically, the US Capitol Police arrested over 30 protesters, including individuals in wheelchairs, during demonstrations against President Donald Trump’s proposed Medicaid changes.

Activists disrupted Senate proceedings with organized protests against the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
The legislation aims to reduce government waste and implement work requirements for able-bodied Medicaid recipients.
The Capitol Police arrested 34 individuals at the Russell Senate Office Building for illegal demonstrations against President Trump’s proposed budget bill.
Thirty-three people were arrested for “Crowding, Obstructing, and Incommoding” inside the Senate Rotunda, with an additional person arrested for crossing a police line outside the building.
Protesters, many wearing shirts with the slogan “Healthcare Cuts Will Kill,” chanted “No cuts to Medicaid!” and “Kill the bill!” while displaying banners that were quickly confiscated by police.
The demonstration was organized by left-wing advocacy groups, including Popular Democracy, the Debt Collective, and ADAPT.
The organizations brought in participants from states including New York, Florida, Maine, New Jersey, and Virginia.
President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” proposes reforms to Medicaid that would require able-bodied recipients to work, volunteer, or participate in job training programs to receive benefits.
These reforms aim to ensure that limited taxpayer resources are directed toward those truly in need while encouraging self-sufficiency for those capable of working.
“It is against the law to protest inside the Congressional Buildings,” explained a spokesperson for the Capitol Police, who noted that there are designated lawful areas on Capitol Grounds for demonstrations.
The liberal protesters claim the Medicaid reforms could impact coverage for low-income Americans.
However, supporters of the bill argue that work requirements would help transition able-bodied individuals from government dependence to self-sufficiency while preserving benefits.
Republicans in Congress are working to strike a balance between fiscal responsibility and compassionate care.
Some GOP lawmakers are advocating for a $15 billion “stabilization fund” for hospitals in rural areas to ensure critical healthcare access remains available in communities that depend on these facilities.
The timing of the protests appears calculated to create maximum disruption before President Trump’s deadline to pass the legislation by the Fourth of July.
Democrats remain opposed to any reforms of government welfare programs, putting pressure on Republicans who hold narrow majorities in Congress.
“Every elected official and every voter should be disturbed by the choice to rip away life-saving programs and policies from working families to fund another American war in the Middle East,” said Analilia Mejia and DaMareo Cooper from the Center for Popular Democracy.
As the Senate continues deliberations on President Trump’s budget proposal, conservatives are emphasizing the importance of fiscal responsibility and promoting pathways to independence.
