White House Wants to Reset U.S. Vatican Ties

(TheIndependentStar.com) – The Vatican City is the home of the Catholic Church and an independent territory. Ruled currently by Pope Francis, the Holy See has its own diplomatic relations with foreign entities. The US and the Vatican often come together over mutual interests and work towards various causes, such as freedom of religion, environmental protection, and human rights.

Under the Trump Administration, relations with the Holy See were strained. Pope Francis and the president did not see eye to eye on important issues, such as climate change, and the Pontiff denied the last requested visit by then-Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo.

In an attempt to smooth over Washington’s relationship with the Vatican going forward, our current Secretary of State Antony Blinken is planning a visit to the city on June 28, 2021. Blinken also hopes to pave the way for Biden to visit in October.

There may be some lingering issues, especially since the Church recently decided to rebuke Catholic politicians, such as Joe Biden, who support abortion.

A strong relationship between the US and the Holy See is mutually beneficial. Both entities can help each other, and the rest of the world, by working together, so everyone is hoping this visit is a success.
