(TheIndependentStar.com) – In a heroic rescue caught on video footage, two Texas police officers saved two brothers trapped in their burning home.
Watch the video below.
Just before early morning, a call came in about a house fire outside Beaumont, with children possibly trapped inside. Officers Ashton Moss and Michael Stephenson from the Vidor Police Department were the first to arrive.
“When I pulled up, I just saw a big ball of fire, so I just tried to run over to the house,” Moss recalled.
“Anytime that you hear that there’s going to be a child involved, that’s, like, your nightmare,” Stephenson added.
Moreover, the children’s mother told them her two sons, ages 7 and 9, were still inside. The boys were stuck in a bedroom, unable to escape because a window air conditioner blocked their exit as flames spread through the house.
Stephenson, using only his hands, yanked and shook the A/C unit, trying to free it.
“When you hear they’re trapped, you just want to get there and do what you can, treat them like your own kid,” he said.
At last, Stephenson forced the unit back inside the room, creating enough space for the boys to crawl through the gap. The officers quickly got the children away from the burning home.
The house was completely destroyed, but no one lost their life, thanks to Stephenson and Moss.
In addition, Vidor Police Chief Rod Carroll praised the officers for their bravery.
“We were 40 seconds away from not getting those children out of the house,” Carroll said.
“If these gentlemen were further away, it may not have been the outcome… we’re cherishing and celebrating,” she continued.
Both boys were taken to the hospital, checked for smoke inhalation, and then released while the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
