U.S. Credibility Falls Apart as U.S. Tech Companies Help China Censor Free Speech

(TheIndependentStar.com) – Government censorship controls the information getting to the people. It enables the government to promote its own agenda and ensure opposing viewpoints don’t get the proper amount of coverage. This is a tactic often used in suppressive countries where the government controls its people.

Communist China is very good at censoring anyone speaking out against its leadership. On June 17, 2021, a police raid shut down a newspaper called Apple Daily and placed the owner, Jimmy Lai, under arrest. The publication is known for being pro-democracy, and the Chinese government said its actions are a result of the newspaper’s violations of national security laws.

Gen. Jack Keane, a Fox News senior strategic analyst, said this marks the end of free press in China and warned that Chinese censorship is spreading to the US.

Keane noted the rampant social media censorship occurring in the US that is similar to what China is doing. Facebook only lifted the ban on COVID-19 lab leak origin theory posts in May; the platform had completely censored the idea before this. Most analysts now view the theory as entirely credible.

As the American Civil Liberties Union states, private organizations have the right to censor content, but when the actions start to become extreme, people must stand up to prevent a serious threat to freedom of speech. This may be a time in American history when citizens need to stand up and clearly state they will not accept the spread of censorship.
