On Wednesday (April 5), former President Donald Trump called for the defunding of federal law enforcement agencies.
The former President’s comments came a day after Trump was indicted in the Manhattan investigation into a $130,000 payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump called for GOP lawmakers to “DEFUND THE DOJ AND FBI UNTIL THEY COME TO THEIR SENSES.”
The former President had baselessly claimed Democrats had “weaponized” law enforcement against him.
Trump made his comments a day after he traveled to a Manhattan court to be arraigned in connection with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s (D) investigation into Trump’s possible involvement in the 2016 hush money payment Trump’s former attorney made to Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress, in exchange for her silence regarding an alleged affair she had with the former President in 2006.
During the trial, the former President pleaded guilty to 34 felony counts related to what Bragg’s office described as “falsifying New York business records” to conceal damaging information and illegal activity from American voters in the days leading up to and after the 2016 Presidential election.
Trump’s allies, including Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.), have been calling for law enforcement agencies, like the FBI, to be defunded.
The GOP’s appeal to defund law enforcement is significant given that many of the same lawmakers attacked Democrats for calling to defund the police during protests that erupted after the death of George Floyd, who died while being held down by a white police officer.
