(TheIndependentStar.com) – The European Union (EU) is at a crossroads after President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose more tariffs on exports if it does not buy more American oil and gas.
Trump’s message to the EU is clear and unequivocal: “I told the European Union that they must make up their tremendous deficit with the United States by the large scale purchase of our oil and gas. Otherwise, it is TARIFFS all the way!!!”
This ultimatum is critical for both the U.S. and the EU. With America now the world’s largest oil producer and a major supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG), Trump’s demand aligns perfectly with national interests.
The numbers speak for themselves. In 2023, the U.S. faced a staggering $209 billion trade deficit with the EU.
By increasing European purchases of American oil and gas, we can begin to address this imbalance and ensure fair trade practices.
Even EU officials recognize the benefits of American energy. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated, “We still get a whole lot of LNG via Russia, from Russia. And why not replace it with American LNG, which is cheaper, and brings down our energy prices.”
This acknowledges the economic advantages of choosing U.S. LNG over Russian supplies, validates Trump’s strategy, and underscores the potential for a mutually beneficial arrangement.
Furthermore, analysts may argue that increased LNG exports could raise domestic prices, but this shortsighted view ignores the long-term benefits of American energy dominance.
THE TRUMP EFFECT:
‘Trump threatens EU with tariffs over oil and gas imports’
“The EU is committed to phasing out energy imports from Russia and diversifying our sources of supply," a spokesperson said. https://t.co/RK3am6j2C5

Expanding the export market stimulates domestic production, creates jobs, and strengthens the geopolitical position. The potential for short-term price fluctuations is a small price to pay for long-term energy security and economic growth.
Trump’s ultimatum is about energy and reasserting American leadership on the world stage. Previous administrations have allowed unfair trade practices to persist for too long, harming American workers and industries.
The EU now faces a choice: embrace American energy and prosperity or face the consequences of protectionist tariffs.
President-elect Trump’s bold stance in defense of national interests is memorable. It is time for Europe to recognize the value of American energy and step up to the plate in trade relationships.
