On Friday, former President Donald Trump spoke during the Republican Lincoln Dinner in Iowa. While he took the stage, a song started playing from the loudspeakers which made a reference to “prison.” This was deemed rather ironic as Trump is currently facing multiple criminal and federal charges.
As Trump took the stage at the event, the song “Only in America” by Brooks & Dunn started playing. The song has the lyric “one could end up going to prison, one just might be president” and was used before each of the 2024 Republican candidates took the stage for their 10-minute speech.
One Twitter user alleged that Trump had been enraged at Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds over the song choice. Many other users took to Twitter to point out the lyrics.
Dave Aronberg, the State Attorney for Palm Beach County noted that that line started playing exactly as Trump was getting on the stage.
Mike Murphy, a Republican strategist also commented on the song choice, pointing out that for the first time, Trump was understanding that Reynolds had not just accidentally gotten her job. He added that earlier she had attended a Tim Scott event where she had been treated respectfully.
The song is a rather upbeat choice that is focused on American patriotism and hope. However, that one particular lyric was rather ironic in Trump’s case. Still, the majority of the people in the crowd did not notice the association between the lyrics and Trump.
Trump was indicted in June in connection to his alleged mishandling of classified documents. He has repeatedly argued that if he was not in the presidential race no one would be trying to come after him.
