(TheIndependentStar.com) – After refusing to go through chemotherapy dozens of times, superstar model Elle Macpherson stood firmly on her controversial approach to cancer treatment as she pursued a holistic treatment.
During an appearance on Australia’s “Today” show, the supermodel found herself in a heated exchange with co-hosts Karl Stefanovic and Amelia Adams after revealing that she refused chemotherapy despite advice from 32 doctors.
Macpherson, now 60, recently shared that she was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago and is now in remission.
In her forthcoming memoir, Elle: Life, Lessons, and Learning to Trust Yourself, she discusses how her choice to pursue an integral treatment approach was met with criticism from those close to her.
However, on the show, Macpherson expressed frustration that the media’s focus on her cancer treatment was overshadowing other important aspects of her book.
“The book isn’t about cancer. And the focus on it is really distorted,” she said. “It’s distorting the rest of the gems that are in the book.”
Stefanovic acknowledged the controversy, saying, “I know, but you’ve found yourself in the middle of a debate that I think so many women are having with not just the community, but with the conventional medical profession,” adding that it was a “good thing” she has “sparked the debate.”
After undergoing a lumpectomy seven years ago, the founder of WelleCo was diagnosed with HER2-positive estrogen receptor intraductal carcinoma, a type of breast cancer known for its rapid cell growth due to a higher level of a specific protein.
In addition, Macpherson emphasized that her decision to skip chemotherapy was not made on an impulse.
“Just to be clear, I sought a lot of medical advice,” she asserted. “It was very interesting, because every doctor has a different opinion on how to treat my specific case of breast cancer.”
She also explained that there was no clear path and no guarantees either way. She just made a decision based on all the information she gathered and what felt right for her.
