She’s the First; For Better or Worse

HAPPENING NOW

(TheIndependentStar.com) – For better or for worse, Kamala Harris has made history as the first woman of color to lead a major party ticket in the United States.

This comes after the results of the Democrat Party’s virtual roll call, which officially made Harris the Left’s nominee for president.

According to Democrat National Committee (DNC) Chairman Jaime Harrison and convention Chairwoman Minyon Moore, an overwhelming 99% of pledged and automatic delegates backed Harris.

“Vice President Harris has historic momentum at her back as we embark on the final steps in officially certifying her as our Party’s nominee,” they said in a joint statement released late Monday night.

After these results, convention Secretary Jason Rae will certify the roll call, and Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, will accept the nomination, which Moore will also certify.

In addition, Harris quickly capitalized on Joe Biden’s decision to suspend his campaign last month, rallying Democrats and raising a historic $310 million in July. This amount was more than double the nearly $139 million raised by former President Donald Trump’s campaign during the same period.

No other Democrat challenged Harris for the nomination after Biden and other party leaders united around her 2024 bid, smoothly avoiding a brokered convention.

On Friday, Harris secured enough delegates to become the party’s presumptive nominee by winning the majority of the convention delegates where she received 2,350 votes, solidifying her role as the party’s next leader.

Harris, who is Black and Indian, is the second woman to lead a major party ticket after Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign and the second Black person to lead a major party ticket after Barack Obama became the nominee in 2008 and 2012.

Typically, Harris would have secured the nomination during the Democrat National Convention, scheduled for August. 19-22 in Chicago. However, to avoid complications with state ballot deadline certifications, Democrats proceeded with the virtual roll call before the convention.

Since Harris consolidated support within the Democrat Party, some national polls have shifted the race to a toss-up or show Harris closing the narrow lead Trump once held over Biden. The Sunbelt battleground states, including Arizona, Nevada, and Georgia, are now in play for Democrats.
