The incident occurred early Saturday in downtown Los Angeles and resulted in his death being officially classified as a homicide.

Wactor, aged 37, confronted a group of masked individuals who were attempting to remove the catalytic converter from his vehicle.

He and a female colleague encountered the thieves while he was escorting her to her car around 3:25 a.m.

According to his brother, Wactor was shot as he intervened to shield his colleague from harm.

“He came across them and he thought his truck was being towed. So he said something to the guys, like, ‘Hey, are you towing?’” Grant Wactor recounted to People magazine.

“And then once he turned around, he saw what was happening and he put his co-worker behind him. And that’s when they shot him,” he added.

Following the shooting, the perpetrators escaped in a vehicle. As of Wednesday afternoon, no suspects had been apprehended.

Wactor balanced his acting career with occasional bartending jobs, often working late hours, his mother explained.

His role as Brando Corbin on “General Hospital” spanned 164 episodes from 2020 to 2022.

The news of his untimely death prompted an outpouring of grief among his peers. Kristin Storms, one of his former castmates, expressed her sorrow on social media.

“I’m in a state of disbelief and complete sadness. I don’t typically do posts like this, but Johnny was such a special person and it feels important (for me) to put these words out there,” she wrote.

“To [Johnny’s] mother and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine what you must be feeling right now. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Johnny was one of those rare ‘real individuals’ that you almost never come across,” she continued.

Sofia Mattsson, who portrayed the widow of Wactor’s character on “General Hospital,” also shared her feelings on Instagram.

“Johnny was the absolute best,” Mattsson remarked.

“So genuine. So caring. Incredibly hard working and humble. With a huge heart that spread so much kindness and joy. He always made sure everyone around him felt seen, heard and loved. I admire the man he was so much and I’m a better person for having known him,” she concluded.
