The left will not impeach him!
Republican lawmakers have come to the defense of Justice Clarence Thomas as he faces intense scrutiny over his ethical breaches following a report that his wife helped in the attempt to overturn former President Donald Trump’s 2020 election defeat.
Amid the nearly weeklong political storm that erupted when a report that Thomas’s wife Ginni Thomas texted then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows urging him to attempt to overturn the 2020 elections, Republican lawmakers have been quick to defend Thomas.
Ginni’s text messages were exposed as part of more than 2,300 text messages Meadows gave to the Jan. 6 select committee, which led Democratic lawmakers to call for Justice Thomas to recuse himself from cases related to Jan. 6 riots. The messages have also caused Democrats to scrutinize Thomas’s failure to step back from cases relating to the 2020 elections.
Despite the intense calls from Democrats for Thomas to step down or face impeachment, Republicans have stepped in to support Thomas, defending the Justice’s work and scrutiny from the media directed at his family.
Republican Senator John Thune of South Dakota seemed to defend Ginni’s involvement in attempts to overturn the 2020 election, saying, “There were a lot of people who had bought some of those arguments.”
Thune added that he believed that Ginni’s involvement in attempting to overturn the 2020 elections had no bearing on Thomas’s work, saying, “I’m fully confident in his ability to do his job in an impartial way.”
Another Republican Senator, Senator Cornyn from Texas, shared his view that it was Justice Thomas’s decision to recuse himself but shared concern about the media’s scrutiny of Thomas’s wife.
“I just think this is a bad development where now public officials’ families are now the target of all the press,” adding that public officials hadn’t signed up to “have our families dragged through the mud.”
