This was surprising to see.
In an appearance on “Face the Nation” on Sunday (May 8), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi took issue with Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s comments criticizing his party, noting that she has been fighting for abortion rights in Congress for “decades,” saying that anyone questioning that fight must be “unaware.”
Newsom, in comments made at Planned Parenthood in Los Angeles on Wednesday (May 6), blamed Democrats for their passive approach to the issue of abortion following the Supreme Court’s leaked draft opinion, which threatened to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Newsom questioned, “Where is the Democratic Party?” before asking, “Why aren’t we calling this out?” He also emphasized that the Supreme Court’s opinion is “a concerted, coordinated effort” that’s “winning,” asking where were Democrats with a “counter-offensive?”
On Sunday, Pelosi’s response to Newsom was that Dems had been finding the GOP on the matter for years.
“We have been fighting against the Republicans in Congress constantly,” adding that Republicans aren’t “just anti a woman’s right to choose in terms of terminating a pregnancy, but in terms of access to contraception and family planning and the rest, both domestically and globally.”
She continued, “This is a constant fight that we’ve had for generations — decades, I should say, in my case, in the Congress.”
Pelosi also pointed out that there had been “bipartisan” support for a “woman’s right to choose” but called out politics for changing that, saying that the court had changed and not the science.
Pelosi concluded that she had “no idea why anybody would make that statement unless they were unaware of the fight that has been going on,”
referring to Newsom.
