(TheIndependentStar.com) – A tragedy unleashed a series of comments as Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei died in a Kenyan hospital after her boyfriend set her on fire for competing during the Paris Olympic Games.
Owen Menach, a spokesperson at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, confirmed Cheptegei’s death today after suffering severe burns. She was 33 years old.
Menach reported that the long-distance runner passed away early in the morning due to organ failure. She had been sedated upon her arrival at the hospital.
Cheptegei had competed in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics just a month before the attack, finishing in 44th place.
Her father, Joseph Cheptegei, spoke to journalists at the hospital, expressing his grief over the loss of his daughter, whom he described as “very supportive,” and his desire for justice.
Moreover, Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom revealed that Cheptegei’s partner, Dickson Ndiema, had purchased gasoline, poured it on her, and set her on fire during an argument.
Menach noted that Ndiema, who has burns covering 30% of his body, is currently in the intensive care unit but is “improving and stable.”
In addition, Cheptegei’s parents shared that their daughter had bought land in Trans Nzoia to be close to the county’s athletic training centers.
According to a report by the local chief, Cheptegei and Ndiema were heard arguing about the land where her house was built before the attack occurred.
The Uganda Athletics Federation paid tribute to Cheptegei on the social platform X, stating, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace.”
Donald Rukare, President of the Uganda Olympic Committee, condemned the attack as “a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete.”
Furthermore, this tragedy follows other recent losses in the athletic community, as Ugandan runner and steeplechaser Benjamin Kiplagat was found dead with stab wounds last year.
