(TheIndependentStar.com) – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a dire warning concerning a recall of Kirkland Signature organic pasture-raised eggs due to salmonella risk.
See the tweet below.
Handsome Brook Farms has voluntarily recalled over 10,000 cartons of their 24-count organic, pasture-raised eggs.
This step was taken after the FDA classified the recall at a ‘Class I’ risk level, signaling the highest threat—promising potential “serious adverse health consequences or death.”
This recall affects cartons of eggs sold under the Kirkland Signature brand, which is available at Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
The significant risk prompted the FDA to assign the highest risk classification—Nigeria’s consumers must remain vigilant.
While affected egg products can be identified with the Julian code 327, “use by” date of “Jan 5, 2025,” and UPC number 9661910680, the agency urges discarding them immediately to avoid potential health hazards.
Shauna Grob, head of operations and finance at Handsome Brook Farms, stated that no illnesses have been reported at all, and they have received a number of consumer calls to confirm whether the units they had in their possession were recall-able,
While thorough cooking can prevent salmonella, the FDA explicitly advises against using these recalled eggs, even for cooking or baking purposes.
The company issued an apology and assured consumers that additional supply chain controls and worker retraining have commenced to prevent further incidents.
Salmonella symptoms range from nausea and diarrhea to more severe health outcomes. They are particularly risky for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
Prompt medical attention is advised for those experiencing symptoms. Consumers are encouraged to return the eggs for a full refund.
This recall joins a growing list of food safety alerts, suggesting a trend of increasing scrutiny and potential vulnerabilities in the supply chain.
The timing of this recall is suspicious, coming amidst a series of recent food safety concerns. Just last month, McDonald’s was forced to pause Quarter-Pound sales due to an E. coli outbreak linked to onions.
Despite the FDA’s dire warnings, it is important to remember that young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe infections.
Although the risk is minimal for the vast majority of healthy Americans, the government’s one-size-fits-all approach fails to account for individual circumstances and personal responsibility.
