(TheIndependentStar.com) – Exposing the deep divide between establishment Democrats and the radical left, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s bid for power in the House Oversight Committee has hit a major roadblock.
In a stunning turn of events, the self-proclaimed socialist congresswoman was narrowly defeated by 74-year-old Rep. Gerry Connolly in a key vote.
The congresswoman’s defeat has left many wondering if the Democrat Party is finally waking up to the dangers of AOC’s extreme agenda.
The House Democrats’ Steering and Policy Committee recommended Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) for the top spot on the House Oversight Committee, dealing a blow to AOC’s aspirations.
The private vote resulted in a close 34-27 victory for Connolly, highlighting the intense battle between the old guard and the progressive wing of the Democrat Party.
While this vote is influential, it is not final. The entire Democrat caucus will make the ultimate decision today, leaving room for AOC to potentially stage a comeback.
35-year-old AOC would be the youngest Democrat to lead a House committee if elected.
Her push for the position is part of a broader effort to install more progressive voices into Democrat leadership.
“AOC has a really shot to win inside full Democratic Caucus. That’s a ‘better room’ for her, says one Democrat,” Punchbowl News co-founder John Bresnahan said.
Adding to the drama, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been actively supporting Connolly.
Pelosi’s move suggests a calculated effort to maintain control and prevent the radical left from gaining too much power within the Democrat ranks.
Connolly, who has been in Congress since 2009 and on the Oversight Committee since then, brings experience to the table.
However, he was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer, which raises questions about his ability to lead the committee in the long term.
This health concern could potentially open the door for AOC to make a stronger case for new leadership.
In her campaign for the position, AOC emphasized the need to counter President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda and support the working class.
However, her history of backing primary challengers against sitting members has likely ruffled some of her colleagues’ feathers, potentially hurting her chances in the upcoming full caucus vote.
If AOC overcomes this setback and secures the top spot on the Oversight Committee, it could signal a dangerous shift toward more radical policies and increased government overreach.
The outcome of this vote will reveal just how far left the Democrat Party is willing to go and it is to embrace AOC’s socialist agenda.
