(TheIndependentStar.com) – Former NFL player Herschel Walker is running for one of the US Senate seats in Georgia. He’s a Republican candidate who is garnering a lot of attention due to the importance of the seat for the GOP.
Walker has gained the support of former President Donald Trump, and in an announcement on October 27, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) threw his endorsement to the former football star as well. In his statement, the senator said Walker can unite the party and help the GOP gain ground in the Senate.

The move is somewhat surprising, since Trump and McConnell have been starkly at odds with each other over the 2020 election and its troubled aftermath. Even before those events, the former president often called for the senator to lose his leadership role in Congress.
Having McConnell join Trump in backing Walker is a sign that Republicans are coming together for the greater good and trying to snag the important Georgia seat. If Walker beats Senator Raphael Warnock (D), who currently holds the position, it would help the GOP in its bid to win back the Senate majority in 2022.
After thanking McConnell, Walker reiterated the high stakes in the race. He encouraged Republicans to work together to defeat Warnock and take back the Senate.
