On Wednesday evening, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) joked that he had gotten “sandbagged” after he temporarily froze during his remarks at a press conference on Tuesday. He further revealed that following the incident President Biden had called him to check how he was doing.
McConnell told reporters that when Biden checked on him, he had replied that he had gotten “sandbagged.” This is a reference to Biden’s recent fall during the U.S. Air Force Academy commencement where he had tripped over a sandbag.
Reporters then questioned how he was feeling after the incident and if he was going to be visiting a doctor. McConnell reiterated multiple times that he was “fine” and that he just needed to always look for those “sandbags” on the Senate floor.
McConnell, 81 had recently stopped speaking mid sentence while delivering remarks at a press conference. A member of his team then led him away from the scene. After a few minutes, McConnell returned to the microphone and continued to answer all the questions that the reporters had from him.
McConnell’s spokesperson added that the Senator had just felt lightheaded.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) also stated that McConnel appeared to be fine during their meeting at 3 p.m. ET on that same day which took place only a few moments after the press conference. He added that following the meeting he has no concerns about McConnell’s health and that the Senate leader had appeared to be fine.
