(TheIndependentStar.com) – Conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett has shocked Second Amendment supporters by siding with the Biden-Harris administration’s push to regulate so-called “ghost guns.”

This development signals a potential shaky ground for Americans’ right to bear arms as the Supreme Court weighs a case that could have far-reaching consequences for gun owners and hobbyists across the country.

Garland v. VanDerStok centers on the Biden-Harris administration’s attempt to classify “ghost gun” kits as firearms, subjecting them to the same regulations as fully assembled guns.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) measure threatens to violate the rights of countless Americans who enjoy building their own firearms as a hobby or for personal use.

During oral arguments, Justice Barrett and Chief Justice John Roberts appeared to lean toward upholding the administration’s regulation.

The government’s argument relies on the claim that these kits are being used in crimes, a notion that ignores the fact that the vast majority of gun crimes are committed with traditional firearms.

By targeting law-abiding citizens and hobbyists, the Biden-Harris administration is once again demonstrating it is willing to trample on constitutional rights in the name of “public safety.”

Critics of the measure were quick to voice their thoughts. Representing manufacturers, gun rights groups and people who own firearms parts, attorney Peter Patterson said, “Congress, in the Gun Control Act, did not seek to pursue its purposes of controlling access to firearms to the nth degree.”

Patterson’s argument underscores the crucial point that the ATF has overstepped its authority by attempting to regulate these kits as firearms.

In turn, Justice Clarence Thomas rightly challenged the government’s position, pointing out that while firearms have been regulated for decades, this specific overreach is unprecedented.

“You make a lot of the fact that this has been regulated for half a century, but it wasn’t regulated in this way for a half century,” Justice Thomas pressed the government.

As the Supreme Court deliberates on this critical case, gun owners and Second Amendment supporters remain vigilant.
