An IRS special agent tragically lost their life following an incident at a north Phoenix shooting range, according to officials.
The mishap transpired on a Thursday morning during regular training activities at the Federal Correctional Institution’s shooting facility. The injured agent was urgently transported to a nearby medical center but sadly succumbed to the injuries soon after. There were no other casualties reported.
The shooting range was being used by various federal departments at the time of the incident, which is situated to the west of Interstate 17 near Daisy Mountain Drive.
In a statement released on Thursday night, the FBI’s Phoenix branch said:
“Our Phoenix office is currently leading an inquiry into the unfortunate demise of the IRS special agent at the Federal Correctional Institution’s Phoenix shooting facility.
Though the range is part of the Bureau of Prisons’ property, it can be accessed by other enforcement bodies for training, due to inter-agency agreements. On this day, the IRS was conducting its regular training there.
To ensure a comprehensive investigation, we will not be divulging specific details at this time. The outcomes of our probe will be shared with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona for evaluation. We aim for a meticulous investigation to cover all facets of this tragic event.”
Furthermore, the Phoenix Police Department conveyed their sympathies:
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, acquaintances, and colleagues of the IRS agent. Our hearts go out to everyone affected during this challenging period.”
