(TheIndependentStar.com) – The US likes to keep weapons of mass destruction out of the hands of potential enemy states and prevent them from building weapon stockpiles, but this isn’t always easy.
On June 1, 2021, it emerged that Iran is trying to cut a deal to buy weapons from Russia.
Iran's deputy defence minister is currently visiting Russia, met Russian counterpart Fomin today who handles arms deals & international cooperation. Russia is annoyed that US/NATO is transferring advanced weaponry to Ukraine. https://t.co/ZmGK4yYsqm

Iran is looking at various defense systems, including the Orion-E reconnaissance/strike drone and the T-90 main battle tank.
Of concern for Iran is a deal to secure the S-400 Triumf (also known as the SA-21 Growler). This missile air defense system protects against airstrikes through radio jamming and can launch missiles at a distance of around 249 miles at about six times the speed of sound.
Iran is ready to shop after the United Nations arms embargo expiration, which is the heart of the problem here. Had former President Donald Trump succeeded in keeping it in place in 2020, there would be nothing to worry about anymore. However, eleven countries decided to abstain from the vote on extending the blockage at the UN Security Council, leaving only the US and the Dominican Republic against Russia and China, who voted to lift it.
Previously, Russia refused to sell the S-400, but with current economic issues in the country and no more sanctions in place, the Kremlin could have a change of heart.
