Huge Recall of Hybrid SUVs

Yellow sign with RECALL text against blue sky.

(TheIndependentStar.com) – In a new move that is placing a well-known automotive giant under scrutiny, Stellantis has recalled 54,000 of its hybrid SUVs worldwide due to a potentially disastrous brake pedal issue.

The threat of brakes disengaging could put countless drivers at risk, especially in select 2024-2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale and 2024 Dodge Hornet models.

This significant recall raises serious questions about the reliability of modern hybrid technology.

Stellantis initiated this global recall after 15 cases of brake pedal disengagement were reported.

In one unfortunate instance, this defect led to a crash, though thankfully, there were no injuries.

This issue has resulted in recalling 21,069 vehicles in the United States alone, with Canada, Mexico, and other regions affected significantly as well.

The risk stems from the potential for the brake pedal assembly to collapse, which could cause an accident, Fox Business reports.

To address the issue, Stellantis plans to reinforce the brake pedals through its global dealership network using a bolt and nut system.

They assure drivers that the electronic parking brake and automatic emergency braking system are viable alternatives for stopping the vehicle safely in the meantime.

Notification letters will be dispatched to vehicle owners starting October 24, 2024.

These communications will provide details regarding necessary steps and repairs.

Meanwhile, Stellantis has sold significant volumes in 2024 models, with 15,566 Hornets and 2,737 Tonales sold in the U.S. by September 30.

The urgency of these notifications reflects the critical nature of the fault in a fast-moving, mass-market vehicle.

This recall highlights the risks often overlooked in modern automotive engineering, specifically in the hybrid sector.

Dealers are tasked with rectifying this problem, reinforcing the brake assembly.

However, drivers are advised to stay informed by contacting Stellantis customer service or checking recalls at mopar.com/recalls.
