The recall, targeting New York company Smith Packing LLC, raises alarm over contamination worries that demand immediate action from both retailers and consumers.
Smith Packing LLC has taken the bold step of recalling nearly 19,000 pounds of ready-to-eat sausage and sliced meat and poultry products.
The recall comes after sodium nitrite levels were found to exceed regulatory limits, a discovery made following consumer complaints of off-taste and off-color products.
This decisive action underscores the critical importance of timely response in food safety management.
The affected products include various types of sausages, franks, and sliced meats, produced between February 19 and April 24, 2025.
These products were distributed to retail locations in New York and bear the establishment number 4578 or P-4578 inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for any potentially contaminated items, Fox News reports.
Smith Packing LLC immediately halted production and alerted the USDA upon discovering the issue.
The company’s parent, Palmer Food Services, is actively working to retrieve and destroy any affected products.
Approximately 90% of the recalled items never left the warehouse, and no adverse reactions have been reported.
However, concerns persist that some products may still reside in consumers’ homes.
“Palmer is working with those customers to recover and destroy any potentially affected product,” said Joe Schaeffer, a spokesperson for Palmer Food Services, cited by Fox News.
This recall affects a total of 16 products under four different brands: Smith Packing, As-Salaam, Beefland USA, and Honest John’s.
While the USDA has reported no adverse reactions, the elevated sodium nitrite levels pose a serious potential threat as high levels can disrupt oxygen delivery in the body, possibly leading to severe health issues or even death.
Smith Packing has recalled 18,792 pounds of different ready-to-eat sausage, sliced meat and poultry products.

The urgency of this matter emphasizes the need for vigilance in food safety, and it serves as a reminder of the essential role government oversight plays in protecting public health amidst rising concerns over regulatory overreach.
