On Monday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) accused President Biden of not focusing on domestic problems after the President made a surprise visit to Kyiv as a display of support for Ukraine in their war with Russia a few days before the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion.
DeSantis, who appeared on Fox News, noted that there were many domestic problems that President Biden should be turning his attention to. The comments were made in response to Biden’s trip to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
President Biden has backed his decision to visit Ukraine, stating that it further showcases the country’s support for Ukraine. He further announced that another $500 million in American support would be sent to Ukraine.
Despite Biden’s comments, Republicans have used the international trip to criticize Biden for not focusing on immigration, national security, and other key domestic issues.
DeSantis speculated that while Biden is on his trip many Americans are thinking that the President is more concerned with a border that is “halfway around the world” rather than their own southern border which remains unsecured. As DeSantis pointed out there have been millions of people who have illegally crossed the border in the past year. The recent incident with the Chinese spy balloon also led to many questions regarding national security.
The Florida governor is allegedly considering whether or not he will place a bid for the White House in 2024. DeSantis was not the only Republican to criticize Biden’s visit. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) also noted that he was not surprised to hear that the President was “ditching America for Ukraine.”
