President Joe Biden is prepared for a race against former President Donald Trump if the two face off in 2024. He often said he is the only one who can compete in such a race.
Biden has said he intends to run in 2024 and Trump has repeatedly flirted with the idea of a race; however, Democrats are saying Biden should prepare for another opponent: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Despite Trump most likely in the running for a 2024 Presidential campaign, Democrats point to the Jan. 6 riots, hearing, and possible lawsuits potentially jeopardizing Trump’s bid, making DeSantis the contender to watch.
According to reporting by The Hill, one Democratic strategist has said, “DeSantis is the scarier prospect,” noting that the Governor is “a smarter version of Trump” and is more “strategic” without the baggage of “a hundred lawsuits at his feet.”
The strategist added that if Trump wasn’t a viable candidate, DeSantis is “the main guy I’d be watching.”
Biden has been DeSantis’ scapegoat. The Florida Governor has blamed the President for taking the country in the wrong direction; he also pushed back on Biden’s call to get boosters despite COVID-19 still raging in the country.
While campaigning last month, DeSantis told supporters, “We just saw Joe Biden test positive for COVID, right? And I’ve said we obviously wish him well on that, but you know, this is a guy that’s taken how many booster shots? I mean, seriously, [he’s] done all this stuff and gets it.”
It’s statements like these that have sparked concern from Democrats, with many pointing to the influence the Governor has gained within the GOP.
