Cementing liberal control despite President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s direct intervention, Susan Crawford has secured a seat on Wisconsin’s Supreme Court.
The Democrat-backed judge defeated Republican Brad Schimel by a stunning 10-point margin in the most expensive judicial race in American history, costing over $100 million.
In her victory speech, Crawford celebrated her triumph over Musk by saying, “I never could’ve imagined that I’d be taking on the richest man in the world…and we won.”
This win ensures that liberal activists maintain their grip on Wisconsin’s judicial system for years to come and represents a clear rebuke to President Trump in a crucial battleground state.
While President Trump endorsed Schimel and emphasized the political importance of this race, Wisconsin voters chose to hand power to Democrats.
“Wisconsin’s a big state politically, and the Supreme Court has a lot to do with elections in Wisconsin. Winning Wisconsin’s a big deal, so therefore the Supreme Court choice…it’s a big race,” the president said.
Liberals are now expected to use the court to advance progressive priorities, including abortion access, union power, and redistricting that favors Democrats in future elections.
Musk spent millions in the race to support Schimel, which triggered accusations of outside influence in Wisconsin’s judicial system.
Crawford capitalized on this narrative, framing herself as a defender against wealthy interests trying to “buy” the court.
The race received national attention as the first major battleground state election of President Trump’s second term.
Democrats mobilized significant resources, with deep-pocketed liberal donors, including Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and George Soros, pouring money into Crawford’s campaign.
This outside liberal funding apparently outmaneuvered conservative efforts, resulting in record-breaking voter turnout that overwhelmingly favored Crawford.
With Crawford’s victory, liberals now hold a 4-3 majority on Wisconsin’s highest court, giving them unprecedented power to shape policy on critical issues.
The liberal-dominated court will likely uphold abortion access despite Wisconsin’s conservative history on the issue.
It may also undermine voter integrity measures, though Wisconsin voters did approve a constitutional amendment enshrining voter ID requirements.
Crawford’s campaign specifically focused on protecting union power and opposing voter ID laws.
Though Schimel campaigned on law and order and warned of Crawford being a Democrat puppet, voters ultimately sided with the liberal candidate.
“I knew I had to put my all in, but that you gotta accept the results,” Schimel declared.
The court’s liberal majority will likely influence congressional redistricting in ways that could affect the balance of power in Congress.
With Wisconsin’s status as a critical swing state, judicial decisions on election rules and district boundaries could have far-reaching consequences for national politics and President Trump’s policy agenda.
