(TheIndependentStar.com) – The migrant crisis is reaching a boiling point, as Joe Biden’s influx of illegals is causing taxpayer-funded shelters to overflow and spill onto New York streets and parks.
“It’s a question on everybody’s mind,” Executive Director of New York’s Coalition for the Homeless Dave Giffen said. “There’s unquestionably more people sleeping in public spaces now.”
As the number of illegals continues to rise in the city, authorities are worried about the number of people choosing to live in tents instead of the city’s shelters.
According to a recent report by the New York Times (NYTIMES), one camp has sprung up on Randall’s Island, where hundreds of tents are routinely set up by illegal aliens. Another camp is under a highway overpass in Brooklyn, but there are many more.
Moreover, with the city already trying to house 65,000 illegals, many are camping outside because they feel unsafe in the city-run shelters.
Many illegals in these open-air camps claimed that inside these shelters, there is no order or safety, and they have to deal with gangs, drugs, unruly behavior, and human trafficking. Ultimately, they feel safer in tents.
Citizens have been complaining about these issues for months, not only in New York but also in cities like Denver, Chicago, and Boston. Rising crime rates seem to follow wherever there are migrant shelters.
However, despite the updated rules, few have been evicted from city shelters because officials keep granting extensions to every migrant who applies. Many who were evicted simply reapplied at other shelters where the time limit starts over.
But the growing number of people opting to sleep on the streets is concerning city officials.
The deputy mayor leading New York’s migrant response Anne Williams-Isom, claimed, “That’s not OK. We’re not trying to be heavy-handed, but if you’ve had your time, you’ve had your case management, and you have to leave, you have to really move on.”
Additionally, the NYTIMES reported last Friday, “Unease over the violence has led some migrants to seek safety outside the shelter system. Migrants sleep on blankets, under tarps that they stretch over tree branches, or crammed into a colorful mosaic of camping tents some have ordered off Amazon.”
It added, “They pool their money to buy eggs, bread, and meat to cook breakfast and stews that they sell or share among themselves.”
