On Monday the White House vowed that President Biden would not sign the bill that would prevent biological males from competing in women’s sports even if it successfully passes through Congress.
The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, or H.R. 734, was introduced by Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., and a vote on it should be held within the week on the House Floor.
The White House has since issued a statement declaring its opposition to the bill. They further note that participation in sports is an important aspect of growing up and this bill would “deny access to sports for many families” by enforcing a complete ban on transgender students participating in sports or playing for a team that is “consistent with their gender identity.”
They further noted that across the nation “Schools, coaches, and athletic associations” are trying to develop rules that would help even out the playing field in “particular sports, grade levels, and levels of competition.” They add that a national ban is not related to a grade or competition level and thus should be considered discriminatory. In the statement, the White House further alleges that this law is “unnecessary,” and that it can be harmful to both students and families.
Finally, it notes that if the bill is presented to President Biden, then the President “would veto it.”
If Steube’s bill was successful any educational institution that received Title IX funding from the federal government would have to ban the participation of any person “whose sex is male” from participating in women’s sports.
