A Yahoo News/YouGov poll conducted from September 2 to September 6 shows President Joe Biden leading former President Donald Trump in a fictitious 2024 rematch.

The poll, which surveyed 1,634 U.S. adults, was conducted following Biden’s divisive speech in which he criticized Trump and “MAGA Republicans” for being “extremists” who are a “threat” to the foundations of the republic.

When asked if the presidential election “were held today,” 42 percent of participants said they’d support Trump compared to 48 percent who say they’d support Biden.
The six percentage point lead is the largest margin Biden has held over Trump since March, a testament to Biden’s approval rating bounce back.

The six percentage point lead is also three points higher than the Yahoo News/YouGov poll in late August, where Biden received 45 percent support and Trump remained unchanged at 42 percent.

Biden last led Trump by more than a six-point margin in March, when he received 47 percent support to Trump’s 39 percent.

Despite the rebound in support, Biden’s victories remain concentrated on the left. His approval rating — 40 percent — also remains unchanged since late August polling, but his disapproval has decreased by one percentage point since late August polling, down from 53 percent to 52 percent.

Among registered voters, Biden’s approval rating stands at 43 percent approve, and 53 percent disapprove, figures that haven’t been repeated since May of this year.

Democrats also have a more positive sentiment about the direction of the country, with 48 percent feeling the U.S. is “generally headed in the right direction.”

The poll’s margin of error is 2.6 percent.
