On Wednesday (November 2), during a Democratic National Committee event at Union Station near the Capitol, President Joe Biden criticized former President Donald Trump and other Republicans for peddling lies about the 2020 election while claiming democracy was on the ballot.
Biden unapologetically castigated Trump, noting that American democracy was under threat because of the former President.
Addressing voters at Union Station, Biden said, “American democracy is under attack because the defeated former president of the United States refused to accept the results of the 2020 election.”
The President continued, “He refuses to accept the will of the people; he refuses to accept the fact that he lost. He has abused his power and put the loyalty to himself before loyalty to the Constitution. And he’s made a big lie an article of faith of the MAGA Republican Party, the minority of that party.”
Biden’s drastic statements come less than a week after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) husband, Paul Pelosi, was attacked at the couple’s San Francisco home.
According to reports, an intruder entered the home looking for the House Speaker, eventually leading to the intruder and Paul Pelosi being in a scuffle for possession of a hammer. The intruder attacked Paul Pelosi with the hammer, fracturing his skull and causing several other injuries.
Biden discussed the violence resulting from the election-denying rhetoric amid speculation by many Democrats that it is assertions like Trump’s about the 2020 election being rigged that led to Paul Pelosi’s attack.
The President stated, “We don’t settle our differences in America with a riot, a mob, or a bullet or a hammer. We settle them peacefully at the ballot box.”
