(TheIndependentStar.com) – In a shocking incident on Capitol grounds, Republican Rep. Nancy Mace was physically assaulted by a man who opposed her efforts to protect women’s spaces.
U.S. Capitol Police arrested James McIntyre, a 33-year-old man from Illinois, for assaulting Rep. Mace in the Rayburn House Office Building.
The incident happened while the building was open to the public, raising concerns about the safety of lawmakers on Capitol grounds.
Mace, a Republican representative from South Carolina, said the attack came after she recently introduced a bill to ban transgender individuals from using restrooms that align with their gender identity on Capitol Hill.
The proposed legislation seeks to protect female lawmakers and staff by enforcing single-sex facility use based on biological sex.
Following the assault, Mace took to social media to express her determination, stating, “I was physically accosted tonight on Capitol grounds over my fight to protect women.”
“Capitol police have arrested him. All the violence and threats keep proving our point. Women deserve to be safe. Your threats will not stop my fight for women!” she added.

Additionally, Mace has said, “I’m a survivor of sexual abuse, I have PTSD from the abuse I’ve suffered at the hands of a man, and it’s so weird and dangerous and perverted, this idea that it’s OK for a naked man to be in a locker room with women, it’s insanity to me, and this has got to stop.”
The incident has further fueled the debate surrounding transgender rights and women’s safety.
Mace’s proposed bill has received support from House Speaker Mike Johnson, who emphasized the importance of single-sex facilities.
Speaker Johnson also noted that unisex restrooms were readily available for those who prefer them.
Despite facing criticism from newly-elected transgender Congresswoman Sarah McBride, who called the bill a distraction from real issues, Mace remains firm.
“Sarah McBride doesn’t get a say in this,” Mace declared. “This is a biological man trying to force himself into women’s spaces and I’m not going to tolerate it.”
