It’s hard to believe that those sworn to protect our nation would be involved in human smuggling, but this case raises important questions about border security and our military’s role in these operations.
Emilio Mendoza Lopez, Angel Palma, and Enrique Jauregui have been charged with conspiring to smuggle individuals from Mexico and Guatemala.
The incident unfolded when U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped a vehicle driven by Palma in Presidio, Texas, which is located along the border about 500 miles southwest of Dallas.
Despite being stationed at Fort Cavazos, these soldiers took part in transporting illegal noncitizens, jeopardizing national security.
“Mendoza Lopez and Palma allegedly traveled from Fort Cavazos to Presidio for the purpose of picking up and transporting undocumented noncitizens,” stated U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza, cited by The Sun.
Presidio’s location and the distance these soldiers traveled highlight how extensive and determined this smuggling network is.
Mendoza Lopez was arrested at the scene, while Palma and Jauregui were apprehended later at Fort Cavazos.
Further investigation indicated Jauregui played a crucial role as the recruiter and facilitator of the conspiracy.
“Jauregui is alleged to be the recruiter and facilitator of the human smuggling conspiracy,” Esparza told AP.
Information uncovered from phone data revealed the soldiers’ collaboration in this smuggling operation.
As law enforcement agencies, including HSI, USBP, and the Army Criminal Investigation Division, continue their investigations, Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Cayton is dedicated to prosecuting this case with the gravity it warrants.
The involvement of soldiers in such activities demands an immediate review of border security because these breaches undermine the safety and integrity of our nation.
“Once I get discovery and have a chance to assess the case, we’ll develop a plan of attack,” said Mendoza Lopez’s attorney, Shane Chriesman, indicating the complex legal battle ahead.
Given Fort Cavazos’s troubled history, including the notorious case of Army Spc. Vanessa Guillen, this incident is another sour note concerning the base that once stood as a military pinnacle.
