20-Year Prison Sentence in High-Profile Murder Case

(TheIndependentStar.com) – A bombshell scandal finally came to an end after a Florida-based former ballerina was sentenced to 20 years in prison for manslaughter.

Ashley Benefield, once a rising star in the dance world, now faces two decades behind bars for what she claims was an act of self-defense against her estranged husband.

Ashley, co-founder of the American National Ballet, was convicted of manslaughter in the 2020 shooting death of her estranged husband, Doug Benefield.

The incident happened during an argument at her home in Bradenton, Florida, where Ashley alleges she acted in self-defense.

Although she came up with a story of abuse and fear for her life, the justice system thought otherwise.

Circuit Judge Matt Whyte in Manatee County, Florida, ignored Ashley’s team’s pleas for leniency and understanding when he handed down the 20-year sentence.

The prosecution successfully painted Ashley as a cold-blooded killer, arguing that her abuse allegations were “fictitious” and that she planned the shooting in advance.

After the sentencing, Ashley’s stepdaughter, Eva Benefield, said, “I’ve waited so long to speak to her, face to face. I hope prison serves her well.”

Judge Whyte also denied a request for a new trial based on alleged juror misconduct.

The defense came up with claims that a juror did not disclose a history of domestic violence and improperly used a cell phone during deliberations.

Ashley’s attorney revealed her client’s plans for the immediate future as they plan to appeal the conviction and sentence.
