The girl, identified as Lataya Powell, confessed to the police after they arrived at a residence on South Sherman Street in Wilkes-Barre around midday, as covered by Local 21 News, cited by The New York Post.

“I’m the reason my mom is dead. I killed my mom and she’ll never forgive me if she is alive,” she told the officers, as documented in the criminal complaint.

The victim, her mother Tameeka Tucker, was found with severe injuries to her torso and head, as stated by the police.

In addition to the tragic loss of Tucker, Powell’s younger brother was discovered in the living room, reclining on a sofa with back wounds inflicted by a stabbing.

Despite the severity, his injuries were not deemed life-threatening by reports from the news outlet.

Powell faced arrest at the scene and the serious charges against her include homicide, two instances of aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence.

Notably, the responding officers did not find any knives or sharp objects at the location but observed that kitchen storage spaces were unusually secured with padlocks.

One such padlock was found detached and lying on the floor, a detail highlighted in the arrest affidavit and reported by WBRE.

Upon being questioned, Powell revealed she had disposed of the weapon at a neighbor’s entrance, as detailed in reports by WBRE.

Powell expressed a profound realization of her actions to the police. She also conveyed a sense of incomprehension towards her actions.

“I don’t know how people can do stuff like this and not feel bad about it,” she said.

News footage captured Powell vocalizing feelings of “regret, guilt, and self-disgust” as she was being escorted into a police vehicle.

In the aftermath, a neighbor discovered the knife on her porch and recounted working in her backyard during the incident.

“I’m just thankful I wasn’t out here because you never know what could’ve happened, but I look at it that something good could come out of this and that she can get the help she needs. My prayers go out to the family and I’m sorry this happened,” the unidentified neighbor said.

Currently, Powell is detained at the Luzerne County Jail, awaiting a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 10.
